The Mother of All Buy-the-Dip Signals Just Flashed

This isn’t just any buy-the-dip signal…

Sometimes the market whispers. Other times, it shouts.

Yesterday, the market didn’t whisper — it roared.

A Zweig Breadth Thrust — one of the rarest and most reliable technical indicators in market history — just triggered. If you know your market history, you understand how big this is. If not, buckle up.

Because this isn’t just any buy-the-dip signal.

It’s the mother of all buy-the-dip signals, and it just lit up the tape.

What’s the Zweig Breadth Thrust?

The late Marty Zweig, one of the most respected market strategists of the 20th century, developed the indicator. It flags the moment when bearish sentiment burns out and a powerful bullish reversal is underway.

Here’s how it works:

  • It tracks the 10-day moving average of advancing stocks on the NYSE.
  • When that average surges from below 40% to above 61.5% in 10 days or fewer, the signal fires.

That’s exactly what happened yesterday.

Why does this matter?

Since World War II, the Zweig Breadth Thrust has triggered only 18 times. After each one:

  • The market was higher six months later 100% of the time.
  • The market was higher 12 months later 100% of the time.

The average 12-month return after a Zweig Thrust: +25%.

Let that sink in: 18 for 18. Zero false positives. Massive gains.

Do you see why I call this the mother of all buy-the-dip signals?

But it’s not just the Zweig Breadth Thrust flashing green. A perfect storm of bullish technical signals is forming right now — all pointing in the same direction.

Let’s run through the recent fireworks…

70% Advancers Signal

Over the past 10 trading sessions, six have seen more than 70% of stocks on the NYSE close higher.

How rare is that?

Going back to 1950, it’s happened just seven times before.

And after each of those? You guessed it:

  • Stocks were higher six months and 12 months later.
  • The average 12-month gain was +23%.

This is what it looks like when broad-based institutional buying reenters the market. Not just a few mega-caps dragging the tape — the whole market is lifting.

Bollinger Band Reversal

Two weeks ago, more than 70% of S&P 500 stocks were trading below their lower Bollinger Band.

Bollinger Bands are technical indicators that measure price volatility and extreme conditions. When stocks trade below the lower band, they’re considered oversold — often excessively so.

Fast forward to today: not a single stock in the S&P 500 is below its lower Bollinger Band.

That flip from deep oversold to full recovery has happened only a handful of times since 1990. And every time:

  • Stocks were higher 12 months later.
  • Average gain? +16%.

That’s a powerful whiplash reversal — and it’s happening right now.

Breakaway Momentum on the Horizon

The Breakaway Momentum Breadth Thrust — perhaps the only signal as legendary as Zweig’s — is on the verge of triggering, too.

Here’s the setup:

  • It triggers when the 10-day ratio of advancing to declining stocks exceeds 1.97.
  • Historically, this has happened only a couple dozen times since World War II.
  • Stocks went up 12 months later 95% of the time.
  • Average return? +21%.

As of today, we are this close to triggering the Breakaway Momentum Breadth Thrust. Especially considering the following:

  • If we get 1,660 net advancers today, it triggers.
  • Or if we get 3,030 net advancers across today and Monday, it also triggers.

That’s within reach — and the market momentum says it’s possible.

The Fundamentals Are Lining Up

The best technical signals come when they’re confirmed by the macro picture. That’s what we’re seeing now.

This is not some technical bounce in a vacuum. The fundamentals are shifting fast — and in bulls’ favor.

Trade war tensions, for one, are thawing quickly. The Liberation Day tariffs shocked the market in early April. But since then, we’ve seen tariff pauses, widespread exemptions, and a significant softening in trade rhetoric.

As a result, the average effective U.S. tariff rate has dropped from 27% to about 20% in three weeks. Some trade deals appear on the way in May with Japan, India, Vietnam, and others, while a China trade deal looks possible in May or June — and that could push the average tariff rate down toward 10%.

The direction of trade policy is, and should remain, decisively positive.

Meanwhile, we are starting to hear chatter of the Fed getting back into rate-cutting mode.

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said this week that the Fed could cut rates in June if the data is clear. We think it will be — especially with trade easing and inflation softening. That sets the stage for a rate-cutting cycle into year-end.

And, maybe most importantly, earnings are holding up.

The first-quarter earnings season is off to a strong start. Last night, for example, Alphabet (GOOG) reported blowout results — showing that AI spending, ad demand, and cloud strength are all alive and well. Plus, early reports from AI infrastructure companies like Texas Instruments (TXN) and Lam Research (LRCX) have been bullish, too. Same with early reports from AI software firms like ServiceNow (NOW).

Final Word

So let’s recap.

  • Zweig Breadth Thrust just triggered → 100% success rate since World War II
  • 70% Advancers Signal → last seven times = all gains
  • Bollinger Band Reversal → consistent 16%+ gains
  • Breakaway Momentum Thrust nearly there → 95% success rate
  • Tariffs falling, Fed pivoting, earnings strong

This is what market liftoffs look like.

This is Wall Street’s version of “all systems go.”

If you’ve been waiting for clarity — this is it.

The technicals say “buy.” The fundamentals say “buy.” The tape says “buy.”

The Zweig Breadth Thrust is a once-every-few-years gift to investors — and when it hits, history tells us you want to be long and strong.

The last time we saw it was in March 2023, which was right before the market launched into the AI boom.

Now we’re seeing it again, with even more fuel.

Don’t overthink this.

The opportunity is here. The signal has fired.

Electronic Arts Stock Works Its Way Back From January’s Tumble

Key Takeaways

  • Video game maker Electronic Arts’ price target was raised Friday by Oppenheimer to $170, a roughly 15% premium to Friday’s close.
  • Wall Street’s current average price target for Electronic Arts shares is about $144, according to Visible Alpha, making Oppenheimer one of the bigger bulls on the Street.
  • EA stock plunged earlier this year, but it’s trading about flat fow the year now. The company is expected to report its fourth-quarter and full-year earnings on May 6.

Shares of video game maker Electronic Arts (EA) have fought their way back after plummeting earlier this year.

Shares of EA finished Friday a bit under $147 as Oppenheimer analysts called for them to keep rising. The investment bank raised its price target to $170 from $140 in a Friday note, well above the Visible Alpha average of Wall Street analysts near $144 and one of the highest around. The latest move has the shares roughly flat for the year, marking a climb off January lows below $120 driven by a worrisome outlook.

Oppenheimer in part credited the new Premium Pass in the EA Sports FC franchise for its bullish outlook, as an analyst said in the note that the firm expects the feature to “provide incremental, multi-year bookings growth tailwind previously unexpected by investors.”

The analysts said the pass has proven to be a monetization tool that works for games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, Valorant, and Overwatch 2, as it is often incremental to other monetization models, like premium in-game items, and it gives developers more control over user engagement and in-game economy.

Oppenheimer said its bullish estimate could prove to be too aggressive if the console-refresh cycle fails to meet investor expectations over the next few years, if sales of older games fall at a higher rate than their replacements growth, or if EA can’t continue to tightly manage its operating expenses.

“While EA enjoys successful evergreen properties like Madden NFL and FIFA, future growth will suffer if consumer perception of microtransactions turns negative,” the report also said.

Microtransactions are transactions made electronically that allow gamers to make in-game purchases of items such as currency and loot boxes, and to tip players. Newer platforms such as Fortnite generate revenue almost entirely from microtransactions.

EA is responsible for some of the most popular game franchises, including Battlefield, EA Sports, and The Sims. The company is expected to report fourth-quarter and full-year earnings on May 6.

Tesla and Alphabet Are Up After Earnings… Should You Buy?

The recent volatility in the market has given investors a painful headache lately. That’s been especially true with all the back-and-forth tariff news, and Trump’s latest comments about Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell this week certainly didn’t help matters, either.

So, if you find yourself craving some stability, wanting to reduce the pain in your portfolio, I want you to remember something.

I think economist Ben Graham sums up the market perfectly here:

In the short run, the stock market is a voting machine. But in the long run, it is a weighing machine.

Simply put, the market in the short term is unpredictable. Just like how an election can devolve into a popularity contest, the same is true for the stock market in the short term.

The market oscillations can be driven by market/consumer sentiment and the news, rather than business results. But in the long term, a stock’s value will grow because of its superior fundamentals.

So, rather than focusing on more talk about tariffs and the latest news, I want to focus on the latter today.

In case you haven’t noticed, it is earnings season, and that’s where we should shift our focus right now. That’s what’s most important, especially if you own stocks with superior fundamentals. Those stocks should dropkick and drive your portfolio higher after good results.

Now, this week, there were a couple of Magnificent Seven stocks that released their earnings that many investors had their eye on: Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) and Alphabet, Inc. (GOOG).

So, let’s take a look at the results for these companies in today’s Market 360. I’ll explain if they’re good buys right now. Then, I’ll share where you can find fundamentally superior stocks this earnings season.

Tesla, Inc.

On Tuesday after the bell, Tesla’s earnings came in mixed. Yet shares went up 5% on Wednesday and have continued to soar – up nearly 18% as of this writing. So, what happened?

Let’s look at the numbers. Tesla reported first-quarter revenue of $19.34 billion, below expectations for $21.43 billion. That’s also down from the $21.3 billion reported in the same quarter a year ago. Adjusted earnings came in at $0.27 per share, well below the $0.44 per share that analysts were expecting.

It’s a horrific miss. Tesla even paused its 2025 guidance due to slowing demand and trade uncertainty. The company also blamed the latter for why sales have slowed down.

Despite this statement, Tesla’s shares still went up. CEO Elon Musk said in the earnings call that starting early next month, he will be spending more time at Tesla and less time at DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency).

What’s more, news broke on Thursday that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will ease self-driving regulations to help enable the adoption of self-driving vehicles. The move was seen as a huge plus for Tesla’s robotaxi efforts, which made investors happy.

Musk also said during Tesla’s earnings call that the company expects to be offering fully autonomous rides in Austin, Texas, in June, with other cities to follow this year.

Now, Musk has a history of setting overly ambitious timelines. But the bottom line is that, despite the awful earnings report, Tesla went up because Musk was on a charm offensive, for lack of a better word.

Alphabet, Inc.

After the close yesterday, Alphabet announced results that beat expectations. In its first quarter, it reported earnings of $2.81 per share on $90.2 billion in revenue. Analysts were expecting $2.01 per share on $89.1 billion in revenue. That also compares to earnings per share of $1.89 on revenue of $80.5 billion during the same period last year.

Google’s advertising revenue reached $66.8 billion, beating estimates for $66.4 billion. Google Cloud Platform revenue was $12.2 billion, just shy of estimates calling for $12.3 billion.

Speaking of clouds, one particularly dark cloud has been hanging over Alphabet’s head for the past year, which helps explain why the stock has underperformed.

The company has been in hot water with antitrust regulators over its search and advertising business. In fact, last week, a federal judge ruled that Google holds an illegal monopoly over the online advertising market.

That’s the second ruling against the company, folks. Ultimately, it could mean that Alphabet will have to sell off or reorganize either its advertising business or its search engine.

The bottom line is that the Justice Department is a little bit like the dog chasing the car. Now that it’s caught it, it doesn’t know what to do.

Still, investors cheered after Alphabet announced a dividend increase of 5% and authorized $70 billion in stock buybacks.

Meanwhile, CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized that Alphabet’s push for AI innovation and competitiveness remains essential for its growth. Here’s what he said:

We continue to see healthy growth and momentum across the business, including AI powering new features. In Search, we saw continued double-digit revenue growth. AI Overviews is going very well with over 1.5 billion users per month, and we are excited by the early positive reaction to AI mode. Our differentiated full-stack approach to AI continues to be central to our growth.

Should You Buy?

Now, after going through both Tesla and Alphabet’s earnings, let’s see if they’re buys right now. Here’s what my Stock Grader tool (subscription required) has to say:

Alphabet earns a Total Grade of “C”, as well as a C-rating for its Fundamental Grade and Quantitative Grade. That means if you own it, it’s a “Hold” right now. And if you’re looking to buy, you may want to hold off and simply keep an eye on it.

Tesla, meanwhile, receives a Total Grade of “B”, making it a “Buy.” However, despite its strong Quantitative Grade of an “A”, which means that it is experiencing strong institutional buying pressure, it earns a “D” for its Fundamental Grade.

The fact is superior fundamentals are key to a stock’s continued success, so I personally wouldn’t buy it.

Where to Find Strong Stocks This Earnings Season

So, where can you find stocks with superior fundamentals this season? Look no further than my Growth Investor service.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s important to keep your focus on earnings season amidst all the market noise.

James Halperin
James Halperin

The Professional Numismatists Guild (www.PNGdealers.org) has given its highest honor, the Abe Kosoff Founders Award, to James Halperin, co-founder of Heritage Auctions. The award was presented during the PNG’s annual membership dinner on April 23, 2025.

The Kosoff Award is given to a PNG member-dealer who has shown steadfast dedication to the entire numismatic community and who has made a significant contribution to the Guild or to the numismatic fraternity. The award is named after PNG’s Founding President who spearheaded the launch of the organization and served as its first President in 1954.

Halperin became a coin dealer as a teenager. In 1982 he partnered with Steve Ivy (PNG President from 2003 to 2005) to form what is now Heritage Auctions, the world’s largest rare coin and collectibles auction firm. In 1984, Halperin became a leading pioneer in standardized coin grading with the creation of NCI, the Numismatic Certification Institute, the first privately owned collectibles grading service. He has been a member of PNG for 35 years.

The Kosoff Award and other honors were announced and presented following the PNG Day activities prior to the 2025 Central States Numismatic Society Convention (www.csns.org) in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg, Illinois.

These are the other PNG award winners honored at the dinner.

Sol Kaplan Award: Presented by Numismatic Crime Information Center Founder and President Doug Davis to Kenneth Mullins for his efforts and contributions in combating crimes against the numismatic community. A former New York City Police officer, Mullins recently retired after years as an owner and partner at Positive Protection, Inc., a firm that provided security assistance to coin show organizers and dealers nationwide. The Kaplan Award is named after a former PNG President whose work led to the apprehension of several people suspected of committing numismatic-related crimes.

Robert Friedberg Award: Presented by PNG President James Sego to numismatic researcher and PNG member John W. Dannreuther for his latest reference book, United States Proof Coins Volume II: Nickel. The Friedberg Award is named in honor of a publisher and author of numismatic reference books and is only given by PNG when there is deemed to be a worthy recipient.

Harvey G. Stack Lifetime Achievement Award: Presented by PNG member Kevin Lipton and PNG Executive Director John Feigenbaum to Dean Oakes and Greg Roberts for their years of extraordinary service to the numismatic community. Oakes is a long-time paper money dealer, researcher, and award-winning reference book author. Roberts is Chief Executive Officer of A-Mark Precious Metals and Spectrum Group International. This award for a lifetime of extraordinary devotion to the hobby or profession of numismatics is named after a former PNG President and influential dealer.

Significant Contribution Award: Presented by PNG Board of Directors member Greg Allen to David Crenshaw, executive director of the National Coin & Bullion Association. The award recognizes years of dedication and significant, beneficial contributions to numismatics.

Art Kagin Ambassador Award: Presented by former PNG President Jeff Garrett to former American Numismatic Association President Robert Campbell, owner of All About Coins, Inc., for distinguished service as an advocate of numismatic goodwill. This award is named after a former PNG President and nationally known dealer who provided outstanding service as an advocate of numismatic goodwill.

Distinguished Service Award: Presented by PNG Executive Director Feigenbaum to Wayde Milas, president of RARCOA (Rare Coin Company of America), for 10 years of distinguished service as a member of the PNG Board of Directors.

A new award category was added this year to recognize up and coming young professionals who participated in the PNG nexGen mentoring program.

nexGen Future Numismatist Award: Presented by nexGen Program Director Hunter Hicks to Frank Sawin, a business major at Bentley University who works at Northeastern Numismatics and plans to become a full-time coin dealer after graduating college.

During the awards dinner, PNG officials saluted four dealers for 50 years of membership in the organization: Jack Beymer, Dieter Gorny, Malcolm Varner, and Fred Weinberg.

How to Talk to Your Heirs About Wealth—Without the Drama

It is a talk that often gets put off or avoided, and for too long. Talking to your heirs about their future wealth may not be an easy or quick conversation, but there are ways to do it without creating misunderstandings or conflicts.

Key Takeaways

  • Gradually disclose the amount of wealth that an heir will inherit. Rather than having one conversation on this topic, have several.
  • Talk about how the family made their money and an heir’s financial responsibilities.
  • Gather a team of professional advisors, such as a CPA, an estate attorney, and a certified financial planner, to aid in the transfer of wealth to an heir.

Strategies for Wealth Conversations

Rather than reveal the full details of your wealth to heirs all at once, gradually reveal this information over time. Plan on having several wealth conversations with an heir rather than just one.

“Releasing information over time is critical to getting your loved ones comfortable with wealth. Once you see the right attitude, you drip a little more information, and so on,” says Noah Damsky, a principal at Marina Wealth Advisors.

Damsky says this strategy can help you avoid a common problem that plagues some wealthy families: wealth that drains people’s motivation to achieve important milestones for themselves “With gradual disclosure over time, you can do so in a way that doesn’t allow wealth to cripple the ambitions of your loved ones,” he said.

You should also make sure the conversation on wealth goes both ways. Answer questions from your future heirs about your wealth, how you accumulated it, and what it will mean as a future inheritance. Make sure an heir understands the financial responsibility they will be undertaking when they receive an inheritance. For younger heirs, make sure the conversation is age-appropriate.

“I also encourage families to involve their heirs early through age-appropriate conversations and financial education,” says Melissa Murphy Pavone, a certified financial planner and founder of Mindful Financial Partners. “This might include family meetings with your advisor team, values-based discussions around money, or gradual disclosure of responsibilities and expectations. When you normalize these conversations, you reduce the stigma—and the drama—around wealth.”

How to Approach Wealth Conversations

Be upfront and transparent about the wealth you have acquired and the amount you plan to pass on to your heirs. Don’t delay these conversations. Need help getting started? Do a brief values exercise to open up the conversation and get people talking.

It can be tempting for heirs to focus on how much they will receive, but it’s more important to keep conversations center on what matters most to the family.

“That could mean journaling about personal values, reflecting on causes they care about, or talking about the kind of legacy they want to leave behind,” says Padideh Jafari, founder of Jafari Law and Mediation Office. “It takes the pressure off the money itself and creates space for more meaningful, less combative conversations.”

Educating your heirs on financial basics is a must. Start by sharing family history. How the family made its wealth is an important component as well. If you start there, you can help an heir to understand the financial responsibilities that come with their family’s money.

“If parents don’t want to discuss how much money they have saved because they want their kids to maintain their impetus to work, they can discuss the hard work that it took to save that amount,” says Samantha Mockford, a certified financial planner at Citrine Capital Advisors. “They can discuss their wishes for the family and the sacrifice that will be required to use this gift to bless many generations.”

Dos and Don’ts for Wealth Conversations

Acknowledging that this conversation is tough is a good way to break the ice.

“Let your family know this isn’t easy for you, either. Saying something like, ‘This makes me nervous, too’ can go a long way in lowering defenses and opening the door to an honest, productive dialogue,” says Caleb Yarian, founder of Better Off.

Focus the conversation on passing down family values and creating a legacy.

Estate planning isn’t just about dividing up assets—it’s about passing down values,” Yarian says. “Talking about what matters most to your family helps shift the focus from transactions to legacy.”

Don’t say anything that may turn family members against each other.

“Some heirs may have earned your trust, so you give them more money or freedom to make decisions, but not everyone has to know each other’s business,” Damsky says. “Depending on how the trust is structured, beneficiaries may know each other’s business at your passing, but they don’t need to know everything now.”

Don’t say too much. Only say what you feel an heir needs to hear at any given time.

“Disclose information on a need-to-know basis and when you think it’s going to benefit them to know,” Damsky says.

The Role of Professional Advisors

A group of advisors can work together to help prepare heirs for their inheritance. Build a financial team that includes a certified financial planner, a certified public accountant, and an estate attorney.

“No single advisor has all the answers. When your CFP, CPA, and estate attorney are working in sync, you create a safety net that helps minimize costly errors, reduces the risk of family conflict, and protects your legacy through life’s curveballs—like divorce, remarriage, addiction, or business failures,” Pavone says.

The Bottom Line

Don’t put off talking to your heirs about wealth. Let them know over several conversations the wealth they are inheriting and their financial responsibilities. Discuss how the family made their wealth and the legacy you would like to leave behind. Give age-appropriate advice to younger heirs, but don’t exclude them.

Put together a team of professional advisors to help with the transfer of wealth to an heir. These advisors include an estate attorney, a certified public accountant, and a certified financial planner. Working together, they can meet your financial and legal needs.

Sherman Collection, Part II, and Rare Ingots Highlight Heritage’s May CSNS US Coins Sale

More than 100 lots from a collection billed as “one of the most remarkable achievements in numismatics” will be among the top attractions in Heritage’s May 4 CSNS US Coins Signature® Auction April 30-May 4.

1803 Proof Dollar or Novodel, PR66
1803 Proof Dollar or Novodel, PR66

The Bruce S. Sherman Collection, Part II includes 109 lots in the second installment of the collection of Bruce Sherman, Chairman and principal owner of Major League Baseball’s Miami Marlins. Part I of his collection was offered in Heritage’s FUN US Coins Signature® Auction in January.

“The same attributes that have helped him succeed in business – passion, deep knowledge and understanding, and a discerning eye – have helped Bruce Sherman build this extraordinary collection,” says Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. “He started collecting as a hobby, but as his passion for numismatics grew, so did his collection, until it became world-class.”

Among the top items from Sherman’s collection is an 1803 Proof Draped Bust Dollar or Novodel, PR66 PCGS that is tied for the finest among just four known survivors. Collectors today know proof silver dollars from 1801-03 as “novodels,” which are among the rarest and most valuable issues in the U.S. federal coinage series. Coin dealer Robert L. Astrich purchased it over the counter from an undisclosed source in 1991. Astrich died in 2009 and, if he knew anything more about the source of this remarkable coin, he took the knowledge to his grave. This specimen has only been offered in two previous auctions, most recently at Heritage’s January 2013 FUN Signature Auction.

Another highlight from the Sherman collection is a 1792 Copper Disme, Judd-11, MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC that is the finest by a wide margin of just three known examples of an outstanding rarity in the U.S. pattern series. The Mint experimented with reeded and plain edges on the copper dismes of this year, and the plain edge pieces are considerably scarcer. This coin possesses an unbeatable combination of absolute rarity, highest available technical quality, outstanding eye appeal and intense historic interest.

None of the nine examples traced is certified with a higher numeric grade than the 1838-O Reeded Edge Half Dollar, GR-1, PR64BM PCGS in this auction. The 1838-O Reeded Edge half dollar ranks among the most famous of all American coinage issues, comparable in value and rarity to issues like the 1894-S dime and the 1870-S silver dollar. PCGS CoinFacts estimates a surviving population of just 10, from a microscopic original mintage of no more than 20. PCGS and NGC have combined to certify just 12 between them, including an unknown number of crossovers and resubmissions; Heritage has located just nine examples still extant, one of which is housed in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution.

An 1835 HM-5, JD-1 Half Eagle, PR67+ Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC is the finest of just three known examples. Few proof Classic Head half eagles are known, and of those, the example from the Sherman collection that is offered in this auction is believed to be finest, regardless of date. Of the 20 on Heritage’s roster, five are museum pieces, including one in the British Museum and four in the Smithsonian.

Another featured collection in the auction is the Pelican Bay Collection, Part I, which boasts the finest assortment of Seated Liberty quarters and half dollars to come through Heritage in the last decade.

Included among the collections highlights is an 1870-CC Seated Quarter AU50 PCGS Briggs 1-Athat is the sixth-finest known example of this coveted first-year rarity from the Carson City Mint.

Other highlights from the collection include, but are not limited to:

Many other impressive lots stand among the top draws in the auction. Among the most significant is a 649.15-ounce Justh & Hunter Gold Ingot from The Marcello and Luciano Collection, which is the second-largest ingot from the S.S. Central Americaever brought to auction. At 218 mm (nearly 8.6 inches) long, this is the eighth-largest gold ingot by any assayer recovered from the S.S. Central America and one of only 13 in the Colossal Size weight class (500.01 ounces and heavier). It is the sixth-largest Justh & Hunter ingot known.

An 1834 BD-1 Capped Bust Quarter Eagle, MS61 PCGS is the fourth-finest known example. Walter Breen once wrote that most, or perhaps all, known 1834 Capped Bust quarter eagles originated as proof strikes. The example in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution originated with Adam Eckfeldt and is likely a proof, while another example from the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Core Collection is certified as a proof.

From The Texas Republic Ranch Collection comes a rare high-end 1794 B-1, BB-1 Silver Dollar, XF40, PCGS. CAC that is the Gainsborough specimen of America’s first silver dollar. It is believed that 140-150 surviving examples remain in all grades, and the present piece is finer than the majority.

1794 B-1, BB-1 Silver Dollar, XF40 PCGS CAC
1794 B-1, BB-1 Silver Dollar, XF40 PCGS CAC

An 1852/1 Humbert Twenty Dollar, MS63 PCGS. K-9, High R-5 is tied for the second-finest certified example. After the Assay Office began issuing fifty dollar ingots in 1851, the contract didn’t allow for production of smaller denomination gold coins, which were in high demand in the regional economy. Moffat & Co. requested permission to issue coins in five, ten and twenty dollar denominations in 1851, and after repeated appeals, permission to strike ten and twenty dollar coins was received in February 1852. A small mintage of 7,500 coins was produced in a single day. The majority of the 1852/1 twenty dollar pieces were melted for recoinage. The offered example is a spectacular Select specimen, tied with one other at PCGS for the second-finest certified.

1852 1 Humbert Twenty Dollar, MS63

An 1879 Judd-1635 Flowing Hair Gold Stella, PR65+ PCGS is making just its second known auction appearance. The 1879 Flowing Hair stella is one of the most unusual coins in the U.S. gold series, and a rarity that has been coveted by generations of collectors. It is technically a pattern, produced and given to members of Congress as a proposed international trade coin, and its four dollar denomination is also unique in United States coinage. Prior to its last auction appearance, in 2015, this coin was held in private hands for at least six decades.

AbbVie Stock Rises on Stronger-Than-Expected Results, Profit Outlook Lift

Key Takeaways

  • AbbVie’s first-quarter sales and adjusted earnings per share topped estimates.
  • The drugmaker lifted its full-year adjusted EPS forecast by 10 cents.
  • However, the company noted its business could be impacted by tariffs that President Trump has said he plans to place on the industry.

AbbVie (ABBV) on Friday reported first-quarter results that came in above analysts’ estimates, and lifted its full-year profit guidance.

The drugmaker generated adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.46 on revenue that rose 8% year-over-year to $13.34 billion. Analysts polled by Visible Alpha expected $2.40 and $12.92 billion, respectively.

Sales of Skyrizi and Rinvoq soared more than 70% and 57%, respectively, but those of Humira fell by half. The three immunology drugs made up nearly half of AbbVie’s Q1 revenue at a combined $6.26 billion.

AbbVie Raises Full-Year Profit Outlook

AbbVie lifted its full-year adjusted EPS profit forecast to a range of $12.09 to $12.29 from the prior $11.99 to $12.19. The company said its current outlook is “based on the existing trade environment and does not reflect any trade policy shifts, including pharmaceutical sector tariffs, that could impact AbbVie’s business.”

President Trump has said that he plans to place tariffs on the drug industry, which were exempted from the first round of tariffs announced earlier this month.

AbbVie shares, which entered the day 1.5% higher this year, were up nearly 3% early Friday afternoon.

RCTV Unveils 2025 75th Anniversary Benjamin Franklin Commemoratives

Gold and silver numismatic commemoratives marking the 75th anniversary of the first proof Franklin half dollars in 1950 will be offered by Rare Collectibles TV (www.RareCollectiblesTV.com) with advance orders being accepted online beginning on May 1, 2025.

2025 gold 1 oz Franklin obverse and reverse

This exceptional offering marks the latest in a series of exclusive releases by RCTV, each of which has sold out rapidly, according to RCTV Co-Founder and renowned Franklin half dollar expert Rick Tomaska who developed the new commemoratives.

The limited-edition precious metal commemoratives that will be featured in programs on the Fox Business and Bloomberg cable television networks are struck in one-ounce gold and five-ounce silver versions. Their design is a tribute to the iconic Franklin half dollars produced by the United States Mint from 1948 to 1963.

“They highlight the timeless legacy of Benjamin Franklin, one of the most influential figures in American history,” said Tomaska, author of the award-winning reference book, A Guide Book of Franklin & Kennedy Half Dollars.

“Franklin played an instrumental role in shaping the foundations of our nation. From helping draft the Declaration of Independence and later signing it, to negotiating the Treaty of Paris to end the Revolutionary War, and assisting in the creation of the United States Constitution, Franklin’s impact on our country is immeasurable. It is truly an honor to celebrate his enduring legacy with this exclusive, numismatic treasure release,” stated Tomaska.

The obverse has a large portrait of Franklin facing right with the date 2025, the word LIBERTY at the top, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the bottom.

2025 silver 5 oz Franklin obverse and reverse

The reverse depicts the Liberty Bell and an eagle, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the fineness and weight of the coin; .999 SILVER FIVE TROY OUNCES or .9999 GOLD ONE TROY OUNCE, depending on the precious metal content.

“As a tribute to the low mintage of the 1950 proof Franklin half dollar, I’ve intentionally limited production of these 75th anniversary pieces to only 499 one-ounce gold and 999 five-ounce silver examples,” Tomaska explained.

Expertly engraved by former United States Mint Medallic Artist, Sculptor, and Engraver Michael Gaudioso, each available Franklin commemorative has been graded Proof 70 Ultra Cameo by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) and encapsulated with a special RCTV Signature Series insert label personally signed by Tomaska.

The Signature Series designation is a prestigious distinction reserved exclusively for coins that demonstrate unparalleled eye appeal and quality for their date and grade, and exemplify the highest standards of numismatic artistry, according to RCTV.

“As we saw with other recent RCTV exclusive limited-edition offerings celebrating the Saint Gaudens Winged Liberty, Indian Head Gold Double Eagle, and President John F. Kennedy, demand for the gold and silver Franklin commemoratives is expected to also be extremely high, with the collection anticipated to sell out quickly,” Tomaska advised.

The gold and silver Franklin commemoratives will be featured on the Rare Collectibles TV television programs beginning on Saturday, May 17th on the Fox Business network at 1 pm Eastern/ 10 am Pacific time and on the Bloomberg network at 4 pm Eastern/1 pm Pacific that same day.

Bitcoin’s Upward Move Continues as Trading Week Winds Down

Bitcoin was trading at recent highs Friday morning after an upbeat week for stocks.

The leading cryptocurrency was recently changing hands near $95,000, reflecting a stretch in which investors have shown more appetite for risk assets amid signs of more clarity—and, perhaps, moderation—regarding Trump-administration trade policy. (Hopes of a summer Fed rate cut may also be helping.)

At current prices, bitcoin remains below 2025 highs above $100,000 but has climbed off April lows closer to $76,000. (Read Investopedia’s live coverage of today’s trading here.)

Bitcoin’s rise has energized some bitcoin bulls. ARK Invest, for example, this week reiterated its 2030 targets, established earlier this year, for the coin: It’s looking for it to rise to a range from around $300,000 to about $1.5 million.

Some crypto-related stocks were also rising Friday as U.S. stocks wavered. Bitcoin buyer Strategy (MSTR), until recently known as MicroStrategy, was up more than 4%. Crypto exchange Coinbase Global (COIN) and miner Marathon Holdings (MARA) were ahead more than 2%.

And Cantor Equity Partners (CEP), a blank-check company that this week announced plans to become another big holder of bitcoin, extended its upward run, rising some 30% in Friday action.

The crypto industry also got a lift this week from federal guidance that eased the regulatory burden for banks with crypto offerings.
